Friendly Fijian Culture

Fiji Islands - or Fiji as it is usually known - is sometimes mispelled as Figi, or even called the Feejees, a term used in days gone by! Although named the 'Cannibal Isles' by Captain James Cook, the only things cooked now in the traditional underground hot stone ovens are delicious fish, pork, chickens and meat! You are invited "to" dinner - not to "be" dinner!

The traditional earth-covered ovens mentioned above are called 'lovo' and during your stay in Fiji you will probably get the opportunity to participate in a lovo feast evening, with a buffet table spread with the delicious hot food and root vegetables along with salads, seafood, curries and more. Before the lovo feast, one usually gets to see a Fijian dance performance called a 'meke'.

Fijians are known as some of the most friendly on earth, offering a genuine, unforced welcome to all those who visit their exotic island home. Their warmth and friendliness will be one of the most enduring memories you take with you with you leave these paradise islands.

Welcome to the Feejees!
